Many times being a game developer will require you to spend a lot of time on your projects, so wouldn’t it be amazing to have someone that would help you with these projects? Yes it would be, and that’s where friends come into play, as they can be the ones to rely on when you’re aiming to acquire those wonderful and stunning results you always wanted. But is this true, or is developing games with friends not a good idea at all? Here are some reasons you might want to think twice before mixing the two.

They can’t be blunt

Friends will always try to avoid hurting your feelings, so you just can’t get honest feedback out of them. It might be ok at first, but the reality is that they are unreliable when it comes to getting good feedback and progressing with your game.

You might be afraid to be bossy

Being a boss usually comes with having certain characteristics, and sometimes you just might not be ready. This is why it’s not a good idea to hire your friends, because you don’t want to ruin relationships between you and your friends, so keep this in mind.

Sharing a mutual failure

Many times, failure can be very hard in a relationship, especially between friends, and you need to avoid such a thing from happening. Sure, a financial recovery might be easy in time, but a friendship that is broken is harder to repair.

Money issues

Money problems within a company can easily turn friendships to hate, and this is why it’s a very good idea to always be blunt and bring in the best possible relationship that you can with your friends. Bringing them on board within your game development company might not be a good idea after all.

Similar tastes and ideas

What you need inside a game development company are people with different visions and ideas. If you bring a person similar to you, such as your friend, the ideas might not be that different to each other, and this limits the potential of your company.

Too many distractions

When you are with friends, you tend to get distracted very easily. This means that it will be a lot harder to be productive or get something done, which means lower quality results within your business, something that has to be avoided.

All in all, while it might sound like a good idea to hire your friend, the reality is that this may not be a good choice in the long run.
