I started Black Shell Media alongside my co-founder Raghav with two goals in mind: To make life easier for independent game developers across the globe, and to share our game marketing knowledge with others. Many game developers want to pursue game development as a full-time career, but may not necessarily have the resources required to make this a reality in terms of reach and marketing strategy. That’s where we come in. We provide the reach and connections required to help indie games do better than they would have otherwise.

To date, I’m proud to say that we’ve helped hundreds of developers with free marketing consulting, grew the team to nine amazingly talented people, and recently even started a podcast in an effort to provide even more value to the game development community. In this post, I’d like to share with you a bit more about our company, and what we value:

1. Complete Honesty

We strive to be fully honest and transparent with all clients, even if it means losing a potential client or sale. One of the worst things you can do in business (and in life) is to overpromise and underdeliver. Trust is hard to gain, but extremely easy to lose.

“In the end, it’s all about execution and how you make and market your product and implement your strategy, but if your product or strategy is flawed to begin with there’s not a whole lot you can do to keep things moving along. Ain’t no marketing plan on this green earth that can sell fuzzy earmuffs on South Beach.” –Daymond John

2. Being Extremely Bold

We understand that we have people who may be skeptical about our services—we don’t let this shake us. We know that we bring immense value to the table for game developers, and have a strong track record to show for it.

“Some people might hate Apple, others hate Google. Some people are right wing, others left. Say something nice about one group, and you’ll ignite the primal rage in the others before they can stop to think. Pretty much everyone thinks like this, sadly, unless they’re trying really hard. The only way to avoid pissing people off is to do nothing important.” –Oliver Emberton

3. Growth-Oriented Action

We understand that we’re all about the journey, not the destination. Success is all about showing up and being 1% better each and every day. Success is a quiet daily set of tasks—showing up raising the bar on oneself over and over again on a daily basis.

“A man who is contented with what he has done will never become famous for what he will do.” –Fred Estabrook

“Anybody who says something is impossible risks being interrupted by someone doing it. Impossible isn’t a fact, it’s an opinion.” –Robert Herjavec

4. A Laser-Focused Mindset

We understand that both companies and individuals suffer from similar issues: spreading themselves too thin. If you spread finite resources over too many topics or activities, this is a sure way to deliver increasingly mediocre performance. We don’t fall for this trap. Our skill set? We market and publish video games, and we’d like to think that we do this exceedingly well, growing more potent with each passing day.

“The best and most profitable corporations in the world are the most focused ones. Southwest Airlines, Intel, Beats headphones, GoPro cameras, Hermes leather handbags… Look around you – Experts are winning, everywhere.” –Georges Le Nigen

“The safest way to get what you want is to deserve what you want. Deliver to the world what you would buy if you were on the other end.” –Charlie Munger

Our mission is to help game developers succeed, and we’ll do whatever it takes to deliver results.
